wheelchair sports
Wheelchair Sports NSW aims to enrich the lives of people living with a physical disability by participation in sports. The Newcastle Para Track program was established in 2017 to create sporting opportunities in Hunter region for Wheelchair Racing and Hand Cycling. It is currently the only organised program in the Hunter that services these sports. Members of the Newcastle Para Track program have access to a variety of racing chairs and hand cycles on a weekly basis, some of which are available for personal loan depending on demand and equipment availability.
The Fearnley Dawes Athletic Track is the place to be for Wheelchair Racing and Hand Cycling in Newcastle. The facilities track has a specially built lane to enable local, national and international wheelchair racers and hand cyclers to train in a safe and friendly environment.
The Newcastle Para Track weekly meet currently boasts a variety of athletes including first timers, developing racers and national representative’s. The beauty of our program is that it is inclusive to everyone who wishes to attend (including able bodied people!) and every individual sets their own goals including racing for exercise, social or competitive outcomes. From September 2019 the program will introduce our “Club Challenge” competition to allow our athletes an opportunity to show their progress in a more formal competitive environment.
